Using Your Medicines: Care Instructions
How can you be safe with medicines?
Make a list. Include over-the-counter medicines and natural health products. Write down the name, why you take it, how often, and the dose.
Be safe with medicines. Take them exactly as prescribed.
Store and dispose of them safely. Store them up high and out of sight. Dispose of them quickly and safely when done.
Know what to avoid while taking a medicine. This may include certain beverages (such as grapefruit juice), alcohol, certain activities, or other medicines.
Keep track of when you need refills. Ask if the pharmacy offers automatic refills.
Understand the signs of an allergic reaction. Ask your pharmacist what to look for. Treat symptoms as an emergency. Even if they're mild at first, they may become severe.
Tell your doctor if you want to get pregnant, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Certain medicines may not be safe.
Follow up with your doctor. Be sure to make and go to all appointments. Call your doctor or nurse advice line if you are having problems.
