Hearing Loss in Babies, Ages 4 to 6 Months

Overview

You can watch your baby's behaviour to check for hearing loss. If you notice a change, your baby might have hearing loss.

Does your baby:

  • Respond to changes in your voice?
  • Look around for the source of sounds?
  • Notice toys that make sound?

Monitor your child’s hearing

By 6 months, your child should:

  • Respond to your voice with interest.
  • Recognize and listen to familiar voices (may become quiet when listening).
  • Look around to see where the sound is coming from.
  • Enjoy music and notices toys that make sounds.
  • Uses vocal play (making sounds for fun) and babbles for attention (“mama” and “gaga”).

Talk to your family doctor or healthcare provider if you have concerns with how your child is responding to sound.
