Manage your child's health records to support their well-being.

Support your children's health and wellness

Parents and guardians can view their child's personal health information and Mobile Health Card. This helps you make informed decisions, seek the right care, and support your child's well-being.

Access can change over time as children get older. Parent/guardian access ends automatically when they turn 18 years old.

Age guidelines

Age	What happens
Under 14	Parent/guardian can request online access.
14+ years old	Child can register for their own MyHealth Alberta Account.
16+ years old	Child may choose to remove previously granted parent/guardian access.
18 years old	Parent/guardian access ends automatically.

Requesting access

Parents/guardians can submit an online request to access personal health information when their child is younger than 16 years of age.

Requests for children 16 and older would need to be discussed with the child's Regulated Health Care Provider.

Before you begin, you'll need:

A verified Alberta.ca Account
A verified MyHealth Alberta Account

Gaining access to a child's personal health record under 16

Sign in to your MyHealth Alberta Account
Go to Services → Apply for Parent/Guardian Access
Select Add parent/guardian access
Enter your child's name, birthday, and PHN
Choose what to access: Personal Health Information, Mobile Health Card, or both
Affirm the declaration

Approval may take up to four weeks, and a request to access is not guaranteed or automatically given. If approved, access will be added to your account.

Manage or remove access

For parents/guardians:

Open the Parent/Guardian Access tool.
Select Remove beside your child's name, then confirm.

Youth aged 16-18, to remove a parent/guardian's access:

Sign in → My Personal Records → Share My Record.
Select Manage parent/guardian access to your personal health information.
Select Remove beside their name, then confirm.

Access to a child's health record requested by the parent/guardian will be automatically removed when a child turns 18 years of age.

Regulated Healthcare Providers

Regulated Healthcare Providers can add or remove access to a child's personal health information upon request.

Regulated Healthcare Providers can add or remove access for parents/guardians, or other authorized representatives in certain circumstances. If you are a healthcare provider, more information is available here.

Can a youth limit their parent/guardian's access?

Youth 16 and older can choose to limit parent/guardian access to their personal health information. Additionally, health care providers can request that parent/guardian access be removed.

If you are 16 or older and have your own MyHealth Alberta Account, you can choose to remove access for anyone currently able to view your health records.

The "Share My Record" feature in My Personal Records allows you to manage the kind of information you are comfortable sharing.

Sign in to your MyHealth Alberta Account
Select the "My Personal Records" tool
Select the "Share My Record" tool

Select the “manage parent/guardian access to your personal health information” link.

Select "remove" next to the name of the parent/guardian whose access you would like to remove.

Confirm your decision to remove access for this parent/guardian.

What happens when a youth turns 18?

Parent/guardian access to a youth's personal health information is automatically removed when a youth turns 18.

What if I am youth and already have my own account. Can my parents still get access?

If you are 14 years of age or older and already have a MyHealth Alberta Account, your parents will not be able to obtain access through our online request tool.

How can I see if my parents have access?

If you are 14 years of age or older and have recently signed up for a MyHealth Alberta Account, you will be able to see who has access to your health records.

The "Share My Record" tool in My Personal Records will display the names of anyone who has access to your health record.

To view, follow these steps:

Sign in to your MyHealth Alberta Account
Select My Personal Records
Select the "Share My Record" tool

The page will display the names of anyone who has access to your health information.

If you are under 14 years of age, please speak with your parent or guardian to confirm if they have access. Alternatively, you can speak with your healthcare provider.

Can parents/guardians access their child's personal health information from their MyHealth Alberta Account?

Parents/guardians can request access to their child's personal health information and Mobile Health Card.

Ages 0-15

Parents/guardians can access their child's personal health information and Mobile Health Card by requesting access online through their MyHealth Alberta Account.
Children can create their own MyHealth Alberta Account and obtain their own Mobile Health Card at age 14.

Ages 16-17

Parents/guardians can request access to their child's personal health information and Mobile Health Card through a regulated Health Care Provider.
Children may choose to remove previously granted parent/guardian access. Parent/guardian access continues unless the child removes access.

Ages 18 and Older

Parent/guardian access ends automatically at age 18.
Due to certain medical conditions, parent/guardian access can be extended beyond the age of 18. Please speak to your child's Regulated Healthcare Provider.

How can parents/guardians request access to their child's health records?

Parents/guardians can request access to the personal health information of their children under age 16 using the "Parent/Guardian Access" tool on the MyHealth Alberta Account. Parents/guardians of children age 16 and older can request access through their child's Regulated Healthcare Provider.

How long will the request to access my child's health records take?

Most online requests can be processed immediately. In some cases, you may need to provide additional documentation to confirm eligibility to access the child's health record. This process may take up to 4 weeks for manual verification. You will be contacted via email when your request has been processed.

What happens if my relationship with my child cannot be verified?

You can upload further documentation to verify your relationship. If you do not have the required documents, contact us for help at 1-844-401-4016.
