Make a leisure plan

Starting something new can feel hard at first — but making a leisure plan is a great step toward building a healthy and enjoyable lifestyle. Start small, stay curious, and give yourself credit for each step forward. Here's how you can get started.

Step 1: Think about what you enjoy

Ask yourself:

  • What do I like to do in my free time now?
  • Are there new activities I want to try?
  • Is there someone I’d like to do these activities with?
  • What equipment or supplies do I need?
  • How much time do I need for each activity?
  • Will it cost anything?
  • Are there things I used enjoy before alcohol, drugs, or gambling became a problem?

Step 2: Make a list

Write down some free or low-cost activities you’d like to try.

Also, think about any unhealthy habits you want to change. Write those down, too.

Step 3: Look for local activities

Check out what’s happening in your community. You might find ideas at:

  • community centres or recreation centres
  • YMCA, YWCA, or local gyms
  • social or hobby clubs
  • senior centres or youth centres
  • churches or faith communities
  • public libraries
  • social media or the internet
  • community newspapers or bulletin boards
  • local schools, colleges, or adult education programs
  • support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), or Gamblers Anonymous (GA)
  • volunteer programs

Once you find some ideas, make 2 lists:

  1. activities you want to learn more about
  2. activities you want to try

Step 4: Plan your time

Planning ahead helps make leisure part of your routine. Try making a weekly schedule with your planned activities.

At first, it might take some effort, but over time, doing leisure activities will feel as natural as brushing your teeth in the morning.
