Diabetes Insulin Pump Therapy Clinics

The IPTP clinics provide education and support for Albertans of all ages living with Type 1 or Type 3 diabetes who want to start using an insulin pump. An insulin pump is a small device a person wears that supplies a continuous flow of rapid-acting insulin underneath the skin. It is a way to get insulin instead of injecting insulin many times a day. It is about the size of a deck of cards and gives insulin through a small flexible tube that goes under the skin. There are insulin pumps with and without tubing.

Immunization - Infant and Preschool Services

Alberta Health Services provides routine immunization for infants and children across Alberta. Immunizations are free of charge for infants and children who live in Alberta.
Immunizations are recommended for infants starting at 2 months of age. Routinely recommended vaccines include: diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus, polio, Haemophilus influenzae type b, hepatitis B, rotavirus, meningococcal, pneumococcal, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chickenpox), and influenza.

For the routine immunization schedule, go to ahs.ca/immunize.

Additional vaccines may be needed depending on your child’s health conditions or other risk factors.

Immunization is effective. Other than providing safe drinking water, no other health intervention works as well as immunization to reduce disease and death rates. Immunization protects whole communities. The more people who are fully immunized in a community, the safer everyone is.

Immunization is safe. It is much safer to get immunized than to get the diseases that vaccines protect against.

For more information, and to book an appointment, call 811 or your nearest community / public health centre. Bring your child’s immunization record to the appointment, especially if your child was immunized in another province or country.

For more general information about immunization, go to ahs.ca/immunize or call Health Link at 811.

At least one week prior to surgery, this service:

  • checks blood pressure, pulse, and weight
  • arranges any tests surgeon has ordered (e.g. blood tests, urinalysis, x-rays, etc.)
  • gives pre-surgery and discharge instructions
  • answers patient questions
  • offers a teaching video

The visit usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. However, if the patient is having a joint replacement or has to see an internist / anesthetist, it may take between 3 and 4 hours, as the patient may have to wait.

Assessments may be done in person or by phone at the request of the surgeon, when the patient meets criteria for a phone assessment and when the completed admission database comes to PAC with the paperwork.

Preschool Oral Health Services

Fluoride varnish helps protect your child's teeth from tooth decay (cavities). It slows down decay already started.

Your child needs four fluoride varnish visits, six months apart, to best protect their teeth. Fluoride varnish is painted on your child's teeth. It takes less than one minute to apply. You can hold your child during the visit.

You can also ask any questions you may have about protecting your child's teeth.

If your child is diagnosed with asthma by a doctor, bring their quick reliever medication to the appointment. If your child feels anxious with dental visits it may trigger asthma symptoms.

Spiritual Care Services

Spirituality is a dimension of health. A Spiritual Health Practitioner (SHP) is a member of the health care team that can help you understand your unique health journey in light of your personal beliefs, values, relationships and experiences. Spiritual healthcare is confidential, inclusive, compassionate, and respectful and SHPs are skilled in providing philosophical, spiritual, and religious patient care across beliefs, cultural perspectives, and practices. They address spiritual distress (experiences of loss of meaning and connection in relation to yourself, to others and to what you understand as greater) and promote spiritual well-being (connection in relation to yourself, to others and to what you understand as greater).

A SHP will listen compassionately and work with you to determine the support you want and need. Services may include the following:

  • Counselling (supportive, problem focused or grief counselling), to help you:
  • find strength to accept what is happening.
  • find meaning and connection in the midst of illness, injury and trauma.
  • cope better with pain and discomfort
  • understand feelings of anxiety, depression, anger, and loneliness
  • understand what’s important to you and make decisions about your health.
  • Support when facing ethical dilemma, moral distress, and the need to make difficult decisions.
  • Being an advocate to support patients/families as they navigate the health care system in light of their spiritual, religious, philosophical and cultural beliefs, values, and practices.
  • Connecting with religious and/or cultural supports and services.
  • Providing Palliative and End of Life Spiritual Care.
