Addiction and Mental Health - Domestic Abuse Response Team

Domestic violence can take many forms, including verbal, physical, sexual, psycological, emotional, spiritual, and the violation of rights which can happen in any relationship based on intamcay, dependency, or trust. The Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART) offers specialized support to patients of all genders who are experiencing any form of domestic violence. Individuals do not have to be in a crisis to access the DART response, and can request a referral at select emergency departments, urgent care centres, and maternity units. Participation is voluntary and at no cost to the patient.

Although, as of November 30th, 2023, the DART project has sunset, domestic violence services are still being provided through localized shelter response, while individuals are present within the Alberta Health Services (AHS) or Covenant Health facility. Referrals of patients to the respective shelters remain confidential, nonjudgemental, and choice-based. A referral is initated through the patient or by an AHS or Covenant Health employee. A shelter responder will connect with the individual over the phone to conduct further assessment and provide the following services based on their needs.

  • emotional support
  • information and education about domestic violence
  • assistance with safety planning
  • information about and referrals to local supports, including financial assistance, counselling, food bank, etc.
  • assistance with contacting local law enforcement and / or Children's Services
  • access to safe accommodations, including emergency shelter or hotel

This service is provided by AHS or Covenant Health and external shelter service providers.

Home Care

The primary focus of Home Care is to provide medical support for people so they can live in their own homes. The goal is to maximize, enhance and maintain the clients current level of functioning by addressing unmet health needs. This includes clients of all ages. Clients are categorized by their health needs into categories based on their assessed needs.

Acute - urgent, time limited interventions, such as wound care, rehab, long term support to those at risk of institutionalization.

Maintenance - stable chronic health conditions, palliative and end of life.

  • a booster dose of Tdap - tetanus, diptheria and pertussis (whooping cough), every 10 years
  • Tdap vaccine for people who are pregnant, every time they are pregnant
  • Hepatitis B vaccine (HBV) for unprotected adults born in 1981 or later. Some adults born before 1981 may need this vaccine if they are at risk for hepatitis B (example: health problems, type of

  • Education/Awareness - Collaboration with patients and healthcare providers around spiritual, cultural, and other needs to facilitate culturally safe, patient and family-centered care. Provide information about Indigenous history, policies, or IWC services/programs.
  • End of Life Support - Supporting patients, family members or nursing staff at the end of a person's life.
  • Meetings/Rounds - Support for patients, families, and staff in family conferences. Attend unit/nursing rounds.
  • Psychosocial Support - Assisting with social supports, listening, trauma, loneliness or isolation, domestic issues, bereavement, coping techniques, etc.
  • Translation - Support translation of an Indigenous language to English or connect patients with translation services.

This service is available on-site in hospitals and public health centres. Upon request, staff can be present at hospital rounds, medical appointments, and case conferences.

Indigenous Hospital Support Staff also gather traditional medicines, educate about ceremonial protocol, and are available to healthcare staff for consultation on a diverse range of Indigenous patient issues.

Indigenous Hospital Support Services

This program provides:

  • Advocacy - Patient advocacy, healthcare navigation services, and health literacy support.
  • Connection to Resources - Case management, coordination of care, and referrals to connect with community services (i.e., NIHB support, referral to a clinic or community agency, equipment funding referral, help with forms, transportation assistance). Logistical support for discharge planning and follow up.
  • Cultural Support - Support for Indigenous patients to incorporate their traditional & spiritual practices during their hospital stay (i.e., smudging support, prayer, singing).
  • Education/Awareness - Collaboration with patients and healthcare providers around spiritual, cultural, and other needs to facilitate culturally safe, patient and family-centered care. Provide information about Indigenous history, policies, or IWC services/programs.
  • End of Life Support - Supporting patients, family members or nursing staff at the end of a person's life.
  • Meetings/Rounds - Support for patients, families, and staff in family conferences. Attend unit/nursing rounds.
  • Psychosocial Support - Assisting with social supports, listening, trauma, loneliness or isolation, domestic issues, bereavement, coping techniques, etc.
  • Translation - Support translation of an Indigenous language to English or connect patients with translation services.

This service is available on-site in hospitals and public health centres. Upon request, staff can be present at hospital rounds, medical appointments, and case conferences.

Indigenous Hospital Support Staff also gather traditional medicines, educate about ceremonial protocol, and are available to healthcare staff for consultation on a diverse range of Indigenous patient issues.

Patients and clients may also be asked about their healthcare experience to help ensure they receive the best possible healthcare.

Patient Food Services overarching objectives are to:

  • Offer quality food and food choice, to support Patient Centered Care
  • Work with the whole care team to ensure that Meals Matter
  • Foster a positive meal experience that results in enjoyment of meals, as well as improved satisfaction and food intake that supports recovery
  • Provide menus that are based on “Canada’s Food Guide” and that are adaptable for therapeutic requirements
  • Offer appealing food that encourages eating for health
  • Provide meal service styles appropriate to the patient population (e.g. tray service, dining room service) and meal delivery systems that support safe high quality food served at appropriate temperatures to the correct patient / resident

Your child needs four fluoride varnish visits, six months apart, to best protect their teeth. Fluoride varnish is painted on your child's teeth. It takes less than one minute to apply. You can hold your child during the visit.
