What is a concussion?

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury. It’s caused by any blow to the head, face, neck, or body that shakes or jars the head, or any other injury that shakes the brain inside the skull. Most people recover very well after a concussion.

How fully and how fast you recover from a concussion is different for everyone, but most symptoms will go away fully within 3 to 6 months after the injury. Managing a concussion properly can help speed up recovery. It is important to listen to your body’s needs when you are injured.

People get better faster when they learn and use these strategies during their recovery:

  • Sleep hygiene
  • Pacing and energy conservation
  • Stress management

These topics will be discussed in detail shortly. First, let’s take a look at some of the common symptoms and problems that can happen with a concussion.
