Throughout the game, players will learn how to protect themselves and one another. We call these ‘power ups!’

Some important power ups in the COVID-19 battle include getting immunized, washing our hands, staying home when we are sick, and wearing a mask when we are sick and around others.

Have you talked to your child about why these are important? Here are some points to discuss with your child to help them understand why this protection is important.

Why do we need to wash our hands regularly?

• Keeping our hands clean is one of the most important things we can do to help us not get sick or spread germs to friends and family.

Why is staying home when you feel sick important?

• When you are sick, you can spread your illness to others.
• To help make sure your friends and family stay healthy, it is best to stay at home when you are not feeling well.

Why is it important to wear a mask when you are sick or have recently been sick?

• If you are sick or have recently been sick, face masks create a shield that helps prevent germs from coming out of your nose and mouth, and may prevent you from making others sick.

After the first dose, your child may need additional doses of COVID-19 vaccine. This depends on their age, health, and if they have had COVID-19 vaccines in the past. They may question why they need another dose. They may show fear or feel anxious about their next appointment. They can come back to finish the level 2 part of the game once they have received their additional dose.

Some discussion points to share with your child include:

• The first dose starts building up your body’s army...it tells your body an enemy is trying to stir up trouble in your body and make it sick.
• Additional doses acts like a back-up team and help make the army even stronger.
• Getting all your doses will help keep you healthy, and will also help keep our friends and family safe.
• Emphasize how well they did, and how brave they are.

It’s also important to continue to remind them of the daily ‘armour’ that will help them stay healthy, like ensuring their hands are clean and staying home when they don’t feel well.

You can also talk to your family physician or immunizer about how to help make your child more comfortable during their vaccine appointment.
