After you fracture (break) your hip, you will likely need hip surgery. The type of hip surgery you need depends on the type of hip fracture you have.

This resource will help you understand what to expect after you break your hip. It will also give you information to help with your recovery. Please let your healthcare team know if you have questions or concerns.

Recovering from a broken (fractured) hip is a team effort. It includes you, your family and friends, and your healthcare team. Your healthcare team is made up of:

  • doctors
  • nurse practitioners
  • nurses
  • physical therapists (PTs)
  • occupational therapists (OTs)
  • social workers
  • dietitians
  • geriatric specialists (healthcare professionals who specialize in working with older adults)

The hip fracture recovery pathway is used to plan your care and where you go after your surgery. A pathway shows you all of the steps in your treatment and recovery, starting before your surgery. Your healthcare team will work with you and your family or support person so that you recover faster and go home sooner.
