Headaches

It’s normal to have headaches after a head injury. They can be related to:

  • a change in the brain caused by the injury
  • healing of the neck and skull
  • muscle tightness and stress
  • being very tired (called fatigue)
  • side effects of medicine

Tips for family and caregivers

It’s important to find out the type of headache pain, where it is, and how often they have headaches before treating it.

Tell the brain injury team what you think may be causing headaches and if anything helps relieve them (like taking a pain medicine).

You may find it’s helpful to keep a headache diary.
