After your surgery: Follow-up care

What follow-up do I need after bariatric surgery?

You’ll need to have follow-up for the rest of your life after having bariatric surgery. This includes having regular blood tests (at least once a year) and getting support for the lifestyle changes you need to make.

You’ll have support with:

  • the changes in what you eat and how much you eat
  • taking vitamin and mineral supplements
  • taking care of your mental and emotional health
  • being active
  • keeping other healthy habits you developed before surgery

Your healthcare team will also look for any problems you may develop after surgery (called complications). Your follow-up care will include checking your:

  • weight
  • nutrition
  • medicines
  • general health

How often will I have follow-up appointments?

How often you go for follow-up depends on your needs and where you had surgery. Most people will have follow-up at the following times after surgery:

  • at 2 weeks
  • at 4 to 6 weeks
  • at 3 months
  • at 6 months
  • at 9 months
  • at 12 months

After 12 months, you and your healthcare team will decide how often you need to have follow-up appointments.
