Gender-Affirming Care Pathway for Adults

Review your treatment and management options

You will need your own specific treatment and care plan for gender-affirming care. Your healthcare provider will help you better understand your options and give you important strategies to guide your journey of gender affirmation.

Non-medical options are an important part of your journey. These include:

Name and document changes
Voice therapy or coaching
Hair removal
Gender-affirming gear (binding, packing, tucking, and padding)
Counselling
Community support

Medical options can include:

Hormone therapy
Gender-affirming surgeries

Choosing gender-affirming treatment options

Given the number of options, the impact of each option, and the benefits and risks of each option as it relates to your goals, gender-affirming treatment options can feel daunting. Asking the following questions may help you make an informed decision about your different treatment options and decide which ones will work best for you:

  • “What are the advantages and disadvantages of each option?”
  • “Can I use any of these options together?”
  • “What are the short-term and long-term considerations?”
  • “Are there risks or side effects from the treatment option?”
  • “What results can I expect?"
