Who should get this vaccine

This vaccine may be given to people who are travelling. It depends on where you’re travelling and what you’re doing. Check with a travel health clinic or your doctor or pharmacist to see if this vaccine is right for you.

You can get this vaccine from a travel health clinic, pharmacist, or doctor who provides travel vaccines.

In Alberta, Dukoral not offered for free. You can check if your health insurance plan covers the cost.

Cholera and traveller’s diarrhea

Cholera and traveller’s diarrhea are both caused by bacteria. Symptoms include very bad diarrhea (watery stool), throwing up, and belly cramping. They’re normally treated by replacing lost fluids. You might also get antibiotics.

Who is most at risk

Your risk for cholera and traveller’s diarrhea depends on where you’re travelling and what you’re doing.

To find out if you’re at risk, contact a travel health clinic or a pharmacist that provides travel vaccines.

How it spreads

Cholera and traveller’s diarrhea spread by drinking water or eating food that’s become unsafe (contaminated) with the bacteria. It can happen in areas where there’s a lack of clean, safe water.
