Cholera is caused by a specific bacteria. Symptoms include very bad watery stool (diarrhea), throwing up (vomiting), and belly cramping. The symptoms are normally treated by replacing lost fluids. You might also get antibiotics.
Dukoral offers protection against cholera. In Canada, it is also sold as a vaccine to help prevent some cases of traveller’s diarrhea caused by E. coli bacteria. However, many other types of bacteria can also cause traveller’s diarrhea, and this vaccine does not protect against them.
Who is most at risk
Your risk for cholera and traveller’s diarrhea depends on where you’re travelling and what you’re doing.
To find out if you’re at risk, contact a travel health clinic, your healthcare provider, or a pharmacist.
How it spreads
Cholera and traveller’s diarrhea are spread by drinking water or eating food that’s become unsafe (contaminated) with bacteria. It can happen in areas where there’s a lack of clean, safe water.
