Overview

Parents/guardians play a key role as children learn to manage their own health care. Having access to their child’s personal health information helps parents/guardians make informed decisions, seek the right care, and support their child’s well-being.

Parents/guardians can access their child’s personal health information and Mobile Health Card. Access can change over time as children get older. Parent/guardian access ends automatically when a child turns 18.

Children can be active in managing their personal health information:

• At age 14, children can register for their own MyHealth Alberta Account.
• At age 16, they may choose to remove previously granted parent/guardian access.
• At age 18, parent/guardian access ends automatically.

Gaining access to a child's personal health record

Parents/guardians can submit an online request to access personal health information when their child is younger than 16 years of age.

Parents/guardians can request access to their child’s personal health information using the online request form when:

• The child is younger than 16 years of age
• The child does not have their own existing MyHealth Alberta Account

Steps to request access:

• Log in to your MyHealth Alberta Account by visiting https://myhealth.alberta.ca/account
• Go to the Service tab and select "Apply for Parent/Guardian Access" tool

• Select "Add parent/guardian access"
• Enter the child’s information (first name, last name, birthday and PHN) and select one or both of the following checkboxes:

  a. Child’s Personal Health Information
  b. Child’s Mobile Health Card

• Review the information and affirm the declaration.

• Submit your request
• You will see a confirmation screen and receive a confirmation email when your request is complete.
• If required, upload documentation to verify your relationship. If you do not have the required documents, contact 1-844-401-4016 for help.

Parent/guardian access to the child’s personal health information and Mobile Health Card may be granted after completing the steps above.

Approval may take up to four weeks, and a request to access is not guaranteed or automatically given. If approved, access will be added to your account.

Managing access to a child's personal health record

Parents/guardians can remove their own access to their child’s personal health information and Mobile Health Card.

Parents/guardians can remove access to their child’s personal health information and Mobile Health Card at any time using the "Parent/Guardian Access" tool.

• Under the "Parent/Guardian Access" tool on your MyHealth Alberta Account

• To remove access, select "remove" beside the child’s name.
• Confirm the decision to remove access to the child’s personal health information.

• Access to the child’s personal health information is now removed.

Children aged 16 to under 18 can remove parent/guardian access to their personal health information.

Parent/guardian access ends automatically at 18 years of age.

Access to a child’s health record requested by the parent/guardian will be automatically removed when a child turns 18 years of age.

Regulated Healthcare Providers can add or remove access to a child's personal health information upon request.

Regulated Healthcare Providers can add or remove access for parents/guardians, or other authorized representatives in certain circumstances. If you are a healthcare provider, more information is available here.

Youth 16 and older can choose to limit parent/guardian access to their personal health information. Additionally, health care providers can request that parent/guardian access be removed.

If you are 16 or older and have your own MyHealth Alberta Account, you can choose to remove access for anyone currently able to view your health records.

The "Share My Record" feature in My Personal Records allows you to manage the kind of information you are comfortable sharing.

• Sign in to your MyHealth Alberta Account
• Select the "My Personal Records" tool
• Select the "Share My Record" tool

• Select the “manage parent/guardian access to your personal health information” link.

• Select "remove" next to the name of the parent/guardian whose access you would like to remove.

• Confirm your decision to remove access for this parent/guardian.

Parent/guardian access to a youth’s personal health information is automatically removed when a youth turns 18.

If you are 14 years of age or older and already have a MyHealth Alberta Account, your parents will not be able to obtain access through our online request tool.​

If you are 14 years of age or older and have recently signed up for a MyHealth Alberta Account, you will be able to see who has access to your health records.

The "Share My Record" tool in My Personal Records will display the names of anyone who has access to your health record.

To view, follow these steps:

• Sign in to your MyHealth Alberta Account
• Select My Personal Records
• Select the "Share My Record" tool

The page will display the names of anyone who has access to your health information.

If you are under 14 years of age, please speak with your parent or guardian to confirm if they have access. Alternatively, you can speak with your healthcare provider.

Parents/guardians can request access to their child’s personal health information and Mobile Health Card.

Ages 0-15

• Parents/guardians can access their child’s personal health information and Mobile Health Card by requesting access online through their MyHealth Alberta Account.
• Children can create their own MyHealth Alberta Account and obtain their own Mobile Health Card at age 14.

Ages 16-17

• Parents/guardians can request access to their child’s personal health information and Mobile Health Card through a regulated Health Care Provider.
• Children may choose to remove previously granted parent/guardian access. Parent/guardian access continues unless the child removes access.

Ages 18 and Older

• Parent/guardian access ends automatically at age 18.
• Due to certain medical conditions, parent/guardian access can be extended beyond the age of 18. Please speak to your child’s Regulated Healthcare Provider.

Parents/guardians can request access to the personal health information of their children under age 16 using the "Parent/Guardian Access" tool on the MyHealth Alberta Account. Parents/guardians of children age 16 and older can request access through their child’s Regulated Healthcare Provider.

Most online requests can be processed immediately. In some cases, you may need to provide additional documentation to confirm eligibility to access the child’s health record. This process may take up to 4 weeks for manual verification. You will be contacted via email when your request has been processed.
