Adolescent Pregnancy Clinic

Services include:

Allard Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Clinic

Offers assessment, surveillance, and follow up for women who have a high risk of hereditary breast or ovarian cancer including BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations.

Must meet the referral criteria on form for acceptance into the clinic.

Clients must be between 25 and 70 and meet the eligibility listed on the referral form. Clients will also be considered if they have:

  • a recommendation from a genetics clinic
  • BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation
  • a first degree relative (a parent, sibling, or child) with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation
  • had radiation to their chest before age 30
  • a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer
  • must meet the referral criteria for acceptance in the clinic

Indigenous Hospital Support Services

This program provides:

  • case management
  • patient advocacy
  • cultural teaching
  • patient/client language interpretation
  • health literacy support
  • logistical support for discharge planning, counseling, and traditional Indigenous healing services for Indigenous peoples

This service is available on-site in hospitals and public health centres. Upon request, staff can be present at hospital rounds, medical appointments and case conferences.

Aboriginal Cultural Helpers also gather traditional medicines, educate about ceremonial protocol, and are available to healthcare staff for consultation on a diverse range of Indigenous patient issues.

Patients and clients may also be asked about their healthcare experience to help ensure they receive the best possible healthcare.

Maternal Fetal Medicine - Fetal Echo

The service performs fetal echocardiograms at 10-40 weeks of gestation for pregnancies at risk for structural, functional and rhythm-related fetal heart disease.

The fetal echo views the heart walls, heart valves, heart blood vessels and heart's pumping strength.
The service also performs newborn echocardiograms for suspected/at risk of heart anomalies not diagnosed before birth for babies in the RAH NICU and Well Baby Nursery only.

Obstetric Medicine

The Obstetric Medicine team helps pregnant patients with complex health issues. Independent doctors who need extra tests or treatments for their patients can ask us for help. We do not take the place of regular doctors. Patients can call the on-call obstetric medicine doctor at the Royal Alexandra Hospital switchboard if they have questions.

Patients must already have health issues that are needed to be managed before and during pregnancy.

As part of our support for patient care and comfort, friends and family of inpatients at hospital and health care facilities can send well wishes via email. Prenatal Education Program

This service provides prenatal education in order to enhance birth outcomes and experiences for the birth persons and their families. Service delivery happens in both virtual and in-person class formats depending on parent preference. In-person classes are delivered in locations across Edmonton.
The program aims to help pregnant people and their families understand and prepare for pregnancy, labour, delivery and beyond. Prenatal Classes may be taken in several formats, from once or twice a week to weekend sessions.

  • basic newborn care

Prenatal Genetics

The goal of prenatal genetic counselling is to provide information and support to pregnant women/couples and their families who may have an increased chance of having a child with a birth defect or genetic condition.

Prenatal genetic counsellors/geneticists help you understand the medical information more clearly and support you in making personal decisions about the health of your pregnancy.

Prenatal genetic counsellors/geneticists also help individuals who are not pregnant but have concerns about having a child with a genetic condition, because of their own health or their family history.

Urogynecology Clinic

Services offered include the following:

  • Education - Most new patients are required to view 5 basic modules online and attend a group Zoom class. Additional supplementary modules and handouts are available.
  • Conservative/Behavioral Therapy – The nurses and physiotherapists see women for assessment and behavioural treatment for the above disorders, which require patient involvement and commitment to modification of activities and lifestyle.
  • Pessary Fitting - Clinic nurses assess and fit women for vaginal pessaries, devices that assist with prolapse and incontinence issues.
  • Medical Intervention – When appropriate, medications may be prescribed that reduce symptoms in women.
  • Surgical Intervention - The clinic urogynecologists will provide surgical interventions for women with prolapse and stress incontinence issues.
  • Physiotherapy - Clinic physiotherapists provide education, assessment and treatment for complex clinic patients. Direct referrals for physiotherapy are NOT accepted.
  • Urodynamic Testing & Cystoscopy - These specialized tests are done to provide diagnostic information, when required.
  • Perineal Tears - New mothers with 3rd & 4th degree perineal tears. Treatment includes education, exercise class and physiotherapy

The team includes nurses, physiotherapists and physicians with a focus on patient-centered care, based on patient education. Patients may be seen by various team members during their treatment at the clinic. As this is a tertiary care specialty clinic, patients can expect to be discharged back to their referring provider. Our goal is to improve quality of life.
