This program offers a specialized treatment for pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations with the goal of improving mood and personal function by applying physical and / or chemical stimulation. This is accomplished by inducing a seizure with physical stimulation to both inpatient and outpatient clients. The typical presentation of clients for Neuromodulation would be clients who are treatment resistant or who are not able to wait for medications to take effect based on acuity of symptoms. Although depression is a common presentation for treatment, we also treat those with other mental health concerns (schizophrenia, Mania, autism, etc).

Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT) medications (ie. methadone, Suboxone®) are available in all locations. Most OAT medications allows a person to function normally without drowsiness or withdrawal symptioms. In cases where OAT medications are not effective hydromorphone can be accessed in Narcotic Transition Services (NTS) locations (Grande Prairie, Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge). In all locations, individuals have access to medical support, medication and psychosocial support (housing, financial, mental health, legal, relationships).

Augmentative and Alternative Communication and Assistive Technology (AAC/AT) are tools to support an individual in order to talk or communicate.
Assisting an individual who may struggle with different forms of communication. There are speech devices with communication software known as Augmentative and Alternative Communication. AAC includes a wide range of nonverbal communication methods including speech sound generating devices. This software captures all the things that support communication when someone cannot always rely on their natural speech or language skills to express themselves. This can include; touch screen control, tracking eye and head movements, and switch controls.
The AAC/AT assessment team works with the client, family and Alberta Aids to Daily Living and does not assume primary treatment (ongoing therapy service for AAC/AT). We will ensure connections and transitions with community supports (e.g., community or school therapists, family, school team) for ongoing AAC/AT treatment and support.
A Speech Language Pathologist will determine if the client qualifies based on communication assessment.

After the birth of your baby, a health care provider will offer to have your baby's hearing screened.
With your consent, your baby's hearing screening will happen before your baby leaves the hospital. The results of your baby's hearing screening and any follow up needed will be shared with you.
Hearing screening is the best way to find out if your baby has hearing loss.
Hearing screening is quick, safe, and will not hurt your baby. Your baby's hearing is important for many areas of child and brain development. Hearing loss can delay your child's speech, learning and social skills.

All babies born or living in Alberta are offered screening for permanent hearing loss within 90 days of birth. It's best to have your baby's hearing screened before they are 1 month old. Newborn hearing screening is free. Additional eligibility requirements are based on your baby's age and health status. If your baby is born with bilateral aural atresia or presents with meningitis, they will be referred to Audiology Services for a diagnostic ABR assessment.

A basic fee of $25.00 is applied to all requests which includes up to 20 pages depending on record format i.e. paper, electronic or microfilm record. Each additional page costs from .25 to .50 cents per page. Additional costs may apply. Fees are applied in accordance with the Health Information Act.

Provides hemodialysis treatments (a process where the client's blood is passed through a special filter that removes waste products and water). Most people need 3 treatments every week. Each treatment lasts 4 hours.
Provides training, supplies and equipment to clients to help them do hemodialysis in their own homes.

Interventional Radiography is a sub-specialty of Diagnostic Imaging (radiology) that uses imag-guided procedures for both therapeutic and diagnostic Purposes. Interventional radiography can be done using x-ray, CT, Ultrasound or MRI images and are done to diagnose and treat disease in almost every organ system.
Angiography, which is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a radio-opaque dye and a specialized x-ray camera to take pictures of the blood flow in specific blood vessels (arteries or veins) or blood flow within the heart itself. Sometimes treatments are done during an angiogram.

MRI scanners use strong magnetic fields and radiowaves to form images of the body. The technique is widely used in hospitals for medical diagnosis, staging of disease and for follow-up without exposure to ionizing radiation.
Used for many exams, including: head, spine, heart, bone / joints, and abdomen.
Mammography is a type of x-ray to look for growths or changes in breast tissue.

Women, aged 45 to 74, who live in Alberta and have no symptoms and no personal / family history are eligible for regular breast cancer screening using mammograms every 2 years. If you're between the ages of 45 and 74, you're automatically included in the Alberta Breast Cancer Screening program. Once you turn 50, and if you haven't had a screening mammogram in Alberta already, you'll receive a letter letting you know that you're at an age when screening is important and inviting you to get screened.

Clients swallow, inhale, or are given a needle with a radiotracer before their exam. Radiotracers go to a specific body part so the camera can take pictures. (tests may take a number of hours to complete; patients may be required to return later that day or the next day to complete exam).
Radiotracers are also given to treat diseases like thyroid disease.

Life Consult Service (PEOLC) is comprised of a multidisciplinary team working across all rural and urban settings of care within the South Zone. The team provides palliative care consultative support for adult patients, families, and healthcare teams to help manage complex palliative symptoms related to the patient’s life-limiting disease.
This service is provided at locations of care including acute care and community (home, supportive living, long term care, private assisted living).
Patients must meet eligibility criteria based on diagnosis.

As part of our support for patient care and comfort, friends and family of inpatients at hospital and health care facilities can send well wishes via email. Sites participating in the program will receive the message, will ensure that the message is only "well-wish" (any other type of communication will be deleted) and will arrange for delivery within 3 business days. A couple of important reminders - the electronic delivery system is not a secure connection, so please don't add any confidential information to your message. Plus the "well-wish" system does not allow for replies or confirm receipt / delivery confirmation.

Pediatric Eating, Feeding and Swallowing ServiceThe Pediatric Specialty Clinic provides assessment and management of infants and children with eating, feeding, and / or swallowing concerns related to a medical, neurological or developmental diagnosis, or children who are enterally fed.

We do not take clients who are looking for a surgical solution to their problem. Their family physician is asked to refer the client to a gynecologist for that concern.
Women with problems related to leaking urine (incontinence) or pelvic organ prolapse.
There is a fee of $39.00 for each new pessary the patient receives after pessary fitting.
If a patient is unable to pay they can discuss with the clinic manager.
Provides peritoneal dialysis to treat people with long-term kidney disease (chronic renal failure). This service also provides education and follow-up.

Outpatient services provided to adults without third party payer coverage and children with orthopedic conditions. Patients seeking physiotherapy services due to work-related injuries (WCB) and motor vehicle accidents (MVA) are not eligible for AHS publicly-funded outpatient services and will be redirected to private physiotherapy provider.
Inpatient services provided to patients with functional limitations resulting from cardio-respiratory, orthopedic and/or neurological conditions.
Community services provided to patients who require home assessment or unable to come to the clinic due to limitations with respect to transportation and/or physical condition.
Wait-time for outpatient and community physiotherapy services is less than 1 month.

Sexual assaults that have occurred in the last 96 hours. The SART team will see children age 14 and older. For people younger than 14, pediatrics will be consulted.
Provides support and resources to promote physical and mental well-being, while also addressing social needs. Helps clients who run into problems because of illness, disability, and / or hospitalization, which may interfere with their being able to get the most benefit from their medical treatment. Community social workers are available through Home Care to address social needs for anyone registered on home care and living in their own home.
There is usually a 24 to 48 hour wait for people in the hospital. Community services may have to wait up to 2 weeks depending on the community and services needed.

Speech-Language Pathologists evaluate, diagnose, treat and enhance function in both communication (speech production, receptive and expressive language, cognition, voice, resonance, fluency, and hearing) and swallowing, including related feeding behaviors. Stroke Community Rehabilitation (CR) provides in-home therapy to mild-moderate stroke survivors who may not have had stroke rehab after hospitalization (stroke under 1 year ago) as well as any stroke survivor 1 year+ at risk of hospitalization/placement or need a top up of rehab and / or education.
In both programs, clients actively participate in setting goals for their therapy, which may continue up to 8 weeks. Stroke specialists also provide support with overcoming barriers, reintegration within the community and transfer of care to outpatient rehabilitation and/or community services for continued support.
Early Supported Discharge (ESD) must have had a recent stroke (within the past 3 months).
NOTE: Medicine Hat location will also accept acquired brain injury survivors for early supported discharge from hospital similar to the ESD program for stroke noted above.
Community Rehabilitation (CR) must have had a stroke 1 year+ and be at risk for requiring increased levels of care in the community.
An estimated wait time will be provided at the time of appointment booking. Generally ESD program referrals are seen within 1-3 days post discharge from hospital. CR referrals may have a brief wait period (1-2 weeks) depending upon current ESD caseload.

Surgeon referral: Sends a completed booking form to the Operating Room.
Visiting surgeons: the surgical clinic clerk books surgery at the time of the consultation with the surgeon.

Ultrasound is an imaging test that captures images of soft tissue organs, blood vessels and tissues using high-frequency sound waves (no radiation). Ultrasound is also known as sonography.

It provides urology consultations, procedures, and surgeries. This service also provides treatments, prevention guidance, and education to patients with urology related concerns. The clinic deals with diseases of the male and female urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra).

This central access referral service provides a single point of entry for patients who require speech language pathology services. This service supports children and their families with communication and eating, feeding, and swallowing, so they can participate in activities that are important to them.
