Diet, Breastfeeding, and Colic

Overview

The exact cause of colic is not known. Colic can happen in breastfed and formula-fed babies.

If you are breastfeeding, there is not enough evidence to show that you need to follow a special diet to reduce colic. If your baby has other digestive symptoms, it is possible that some foods in your diet could affect baby’s crying.

Vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or blood or mucus in the stool are not symptoms of colic. If your baby has any of these symptoms, your baby needs to be seen by a doctor.

If you suspect that your baby's crying becomes worse after feeding, talk to a healthcare provider for advice. Continue to breastfeed your baby and keep a record of what you eat and how your baby acts, especially when crying episodes occur.

If you are thinking about eliminating foods from your diet, talk to a registered dietitian. You can call Health Link at 811 or complete the online self-referral form.
