Nurse practitioners (NPs) are advanced practice nurses. They combine both clinical skills in nursing and medicine to assess, diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medicines and treatments, send referrals, and perform procedures to meet the health needs of patients. NPs can practice independently. They provide a full range of health services to people at all ages and stages of life.
NPs have completed additional education and have a minimum of a master’s degree. They must maintain their registration and licence on the Nurse Practitioner Registrar with the provincial college of registered nurses.
