School Oral Health Services at Edmonton Community Health Hub North

Preventive dental health services are offered to students in Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 to prevent tooth decay.

Eligibility

Alberta Health Services (AHS) health zones partner with schools in low income neighborhoods to provide preventive dental services at school.

How to access this service

Information about services along with a consent form is sent home to all students in eligible schools. A parent or legal guardian signature is required for service.

Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT) medications (ie. methadone, Suboxone®) are available in all locations. Most OAT medications allows a person to function normally without drowsiness or withdrawal symptioms. In cases where OAT medications are not effective hydromorphone can be accessed in Narcotic Transition Services (NTS) locations (Grande Prairie, Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge). In all locations, individuals have access to medical support, medication and psychosocial support (housing, financial, mental health, legal, relationships).

Services available in all clinics may include:

  • ongoing support and monitoring (e.g. prescription management, medical follow up, urine testing, counselling and treatment planning)
  • health, safety and risk reduction teaching and management
  • source of information and expertise for community stakeholders on Opioid Agonist Treatment and the medications used
  • links to community pharmacists
  • links to other addictions treatment services
  • links to other social and health support systems
  • hepatitis and HIV screening

Services are voluntary and confidential.

COAST is a cross-ministerial program between Recovery Alberta and Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD), Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD), and Children and Family Services (CFS). Using a multi-disciplinary approach, we support children, youth, and adults with complex service needs (such as intellectual disability and challenging behaviours/high risk). The team aims to support the person, family, caregivers, community, and larger systems through assessment, recommendations, interventions, education, and support to transition effectively. COAST has access to specialized psychiatry support utilizing a shared care model with community physicians.

First connection at Hope & Wellness: The Group Based Information Session welcomes clients and offers an overview of our program in a group format. Clients who are interested in our services are offered scheduling into our Group Based Information Session. From there, the client is booked into our Group Based Prep Series. This group series prepares clients for groups, offers information about DBT-informed practice, and provides opportunities to set goals.

Clients are expected to be self-sufficient in managing their attendance to groups (e.g., transportation, medication, communicating their basic needs, basic activities of daily living) and are able to identify and actively engage in the development of and participation in their recovery plan.
