Learning About Chorioamnionitis

What is it?

Chorioamnionitis (say "kor-ee-oh-am-nee-oh-NY-tus") is a problem that can affect you when you are pregnant. It's an infection in the uterus. It's also known as intraamniotic infection (IAI).

It can happen when the amniotic sac breaks early. If your baby isn't born for a long time after that, then infection can occur. Treatment lowers the risk for other health problems that can affect you and your baby.

How is it treated?

There are two main treatments for this condition. You will get intravenous (I.V.) antibiotics for the infection. And your doctor or midwife will deliver the baby. You may also get medicines to reduce fever. After the birth, you and your baby will be watched to make sure you are doing well.
