Anorexia: Learning New Eating Behaviours

Overview

People who have anorexia often have difficulty at mealtimes. If it's stressful for you, try something different.

  • Make the environment as relaxing as possible. Wear comfortable clothing and eat somewhere that’s comfortable.
  • Focus on taking one more bite.
  • Do something distracting. Play a game, talk to people about things that interest you, or watch TV.
  • Avoid conversations about food or body weight, unless it’s helpful to share your worries with someone who can provide support.
  • Write down thoughts and feelings that come up.
  • Try deep breathing .
  • Try grounding exercises.
  • Trust that people around you are there to support your recovery. Not everyone knows the best way to make you feel supported, so let them know what you find helpful or unhelpful.

The following may also help you develop more healthy eating habits:

  • Book an appointment with a registered dietitian for guidance on when, what, and how much food to eat.
  • Learn stress management techniques (online or with therapist) to better manage other stressors in life.
