Here's how to apply a topical ointment or cream to your child's skin.

But first, there are a couple of don'ts.

Unless your doctor told you to, don't apply creams or ointments to weeping, scraped, or infected skin.

And, because some creams are too harsh for some parts of the body, avoid the face and diaper area unless the cream is intended for that area.

Always make sure you have the correct medicine.

Before you get started, be sure to read, understand, and follow your doctor's or the label's directions exactly.

Wash your hands.

And if your doctor told you to, wear disposable medical gloves.

Squeeze a small amount of the cream or ointment onto your finger, and gently apply it to the area.

You can spread it a little bit beyond the edge of the area.

Ask your child not to touch the area so the cream can do its work.

Wash your hands again when you are done, even if you wore gloves.

That's it!

If you have any questions, you can always call your doctor or pharmacist.
