Blood Thinners

A blood thinner is a medicine that helps prevent blood clots from forming. Most people will be asked to take some type of blood thinner after surgery.

You may be asked to give yourself blood thinners by needle every day for a few weeks after you go home. If you need to take a blood thinner at home, your healthcare team will show you how to give yourself the medicine before you go home.

You may need to buy the medicine and the supplies to inject the blood thinner. If you're worried about the cost, or about injecting the medicine, talk to your healthcare team.

Your team may be able to arrange financial or other supports for you.
