Starting to move soon after surgery will:
After surgery, you'll be asked to record in your log book the activity and deep breathing exercises you do in the hospital. You'll be asked to continue and increase these activities while you're in the hospital.
You'll be asked to sit up with help on your bed and your chair on the day of surgery.
If you're able, you may be asked to walk a short distance. Every day after surgery you'll be asked to be out of bed for a longer time and to walk farther.
The day of surgery, you will be asked to start doing deep breathing exercises to keep your lungs strong and clear and keep breathing muscles strong. You'll be given a plastic device called a spirometer. Your healthcare team will teach you how to use it. Click the How to use an Incentive Spirometer link at right for more information.
Starting on the day of surgery, you'll be asked to do simple leg exercises.
