Your Life Story

A life story can be a helpful tool for someone with dementia and those caring for them. It can be used to:

  • help others better understand how they feel and what they need or want as their dementia gets worse
  • help others know their likes, dislikes, successes, life history, important people in their life, and what could trigger certain feelings or reactions
  • remind them about the past times you’ve shared
  • help them deal with life issues that aren’t settled or that they worry about

Your loved one’s life story can be a book, collage, or memory box using photos, notes, and other things that are important to them. They can make this on their own, with or without help, or you may wish to make it for them as the dementia gets worse.

If you make a life story for your loved one, try not to use any stories or information that they wouldn’t want to share or that may upset them.
