Your options

  • Have shoulder replacement surgery.
  • Don't have surgery. Instead, manage your osteoarthritis with medicine, exercise, physiotherapy, and other treatments.

Key points to remember

  • Most people can manage osteoarthritis pain with medicine, exercise, and other treatments that don't involve surgery.
  • Surgery may be an option if your pain is very bad, you can barely move your arm and shoulder, you are not able to do your daily activities, you have lost a lot of cartilage, and/or other treatments haven't helped.
  • After surgery, you may be able to go back to doing your normal activities with less pain. But your shoulder won't move as far as it did before you started to have shoulder problems.
  • Artificial shoulder joints usually last 10 to 20 years. You may need to decide whether to have surgery again if the joint wears out.
  • You'll need several months of physiotherapy to get the best use of your new joint.
