Not all patients with lower urinary tract symptoms need a referral, but depending on the type of symptoms and how bad your symptoms are, your healthcare team may refer you to a urologist.
A urologist is a medical specialist who focuses on helping patients with diseases and conditions of the male and female urinary systems, as well as the male reproductive system. Your urologist will assess you and recommend what treatment is best for you and your needs.
You can find out more about the referral criteria for a specialist by asking your healthcare provider.
