Not all people with carpal tunnel syndrome need a referral to see a specialist. Non-surgical treatment options like wrist splints and changing your activities are usually tried first.

Depending on your symptoms, history, and test results, you may need a referral to a specialist for:

ultrasound-guided steroid injection
electrodiagnostic studies
ultrasound
carpal tunnel release surgery

The specialist may diagnose your concern, order more tests, or discuss treatment and management options with you.

Ask your healthcare provider about the referral criteria for a specialist.
