Female Urinary Incontinence Pathway

Review your treatment and management options

After your healthcare provider understands the cause of incontinence, you will work together on a treatment plan that works best for you.

Depending on what is causing your incontinence, your treatment plan may include:

  • pelvic floor muscle training (such as Kegel exercises) to strengthen the muscles that control the flow of urine (You can get support from a pelvic floor physiotherapist to do exercises properly.)
  • lifestyle changes, such having a healthy weight and avoiding things that trigger your symptoms, to help you manage your condition with fewer symptoms
  • biofeedback to help you have more control of your body
  • bladder training to help you go longer times without urinating
  • medicines to help manage symptoms
  • pessaries, which are silicone medical devices that hold the bladder and uterus in place
  • surgery if you have tried other treatments and have had not had the results you want

Some treatments take time to work. Follow your healthcare team's advice as you try different treatments.
