Insulin Pump Therapy

2.3 What insulin pumps don’t do

From the previous page, you can see that using an insulin pump is a lot of work. You still need to check your blood glucose, and you’ll still have to deal with blood glucose concerns. Here’s what insulin pumps don’t do for you:

  • They don’t work as an artificial pancreas.
  • They don’t automatically protect you from high or low blood glucose.
  • They don’t count carbohydrate for you.
  • They don’t give you insulin automatically when you eat.
  • They don’t take away the need to check your blood glucose.

In Section 9: A day on insulin pump therapy, you’ll learn more about what a person on insulin pump therapy needs to do every day.
