Section 5: Steps for doing intermittent self-catheterization (ISC)

In this section, you’ll learn:

  • How to get ready to do intermittent self-catheterization (ISC).
  • Step-by-step instructions for how to do ISC.
  • Tips to help the catheter go in and come out more easily.

Before you start

Choose a room or space at home to start practicing self-catheterizing. You’ll need:

  • privacy
  • good lighting
  • a surface to put your supplies on
  • a chair or bed
  • room for a mirror to see yourself (at least when you first start doing ISC)

As you get comfortable with the procedure, you may not need a mirror, but will catheterize simply by feeling for the opening of the urethra.

After a while, you’ll be able to catheterize yourself in any bathroom, even away from home.
