Section 4: Supplies you need for intermittent self-catheterization (ISC)

In this section, you’ll learn:

What supplies you need for intermittent self-catheterization (ISC).
What different types of catheters exist.

What supplies do I need?

Make sure you have all the supplies with you before you start to put in your catheter. Some things you’ll already have at home. Your healthcare provider will help you get the other supplies.

You’ll need:

soap and water
clean washcloths and towels
mirror (at least at first, to help you see your anatomy)
flashlight or bright light (if needed)
container to collect urine (pee)
- If you need to measure your urine, you will need a large measuring cup. If you don’t need to measure your urine, you can use a measuring hat (see photo), ice cream container, or margarine container. You’ll be able to empty your catheter directly into the toilet after you’re comfortable with ISC and don’t need to measure any more.

container to store catheters (like Ziploc bags or a toothbrush holder)

Manufacturers recommend that single-use catheters are used only once. If you plan to reuse catheters, please talk to your healthcare provider.
