Intermittent Self-Catheterization (Female)

Avoiding a urinary tract infection

Here are 3 important things you can do to avoid getting a urinary tract infection:

  • Empty your bladder regularly so it doesn’t get too full.
  • Drink 6 to 8 cups of water every day.
  • Make sure you follow the instructions for doing intermittent self-catheterization (ISC), including frequent hand washing.

If you are getting frequent urinary tract infections (more than 2 in 6 months, or more than 3 in 12 months) you should talk to your healthcare provider about ways to prevent recurrent urinary tract infections.
