Gaming

Playing games using digital technology (gaming) can be a fun way to learn useful skills and connect with others. Most adults and youth can use games in a healthy way without it leading to problems.

But too much gaming, or gaming without parental supervision, can lead to harmful behaviours like disrupted sleep, poor performance at school, increased irritability, reduced physical activity, or withdrawal from in-person social interactions. In rare cases, gaming can become compulsive (doing something a lot and feeling like you can’t stop doing it) or interfere with your daily responsibilities and well-being.

Knowing what to watch for is an important way to keep gaming a safe activity.

Parents and caregivers play a key role in helping children and teens maintain a healthy relationship with gaming. Setting limits on screen time, understanding the games being played, discussing online safety, and encouraging a balance with other activities are all important strategies. Recognizing early signs that you may have problems with gaming can help keep this activity enjoyable and safe for everyone.

“Social media, along with video games, are created and designed to attract and keep the attention of people. I don’t know how many times I have stayed up past 1:00 or 2:00 a.m. gaming or watching videos. It is often difficult to remember to stop and pull the plug. Technology has affected me in many different ways. It has connected me to the world, and to others around me, yet remains a challenge that I have to deal with every day”.

– Anonymous youth, age 16
