Headache Management: Sleep Strategies

The 4 A's of Stress Management

Try the 4 A's of stress management:

Change the Situation 1. Avoid the stressor
2. Alter the situation
Change Your Reaction 3. Adapt to the stressor
4. Accept the stressor
  1. Avoid the Stressor

    • don't overload yourself - learn to say "no"
    • decide what items on your to-do list are "shoulds" or "musts", and eliminate or minimize the "shoulds"
    • if you've done all you can and you still feel stressed when interacting with certain individuals, limit contact with them
    • control your environment (i.e. if a certain route home is often congested and causes stress, try a slower less-busy route)
  2. Alter the Situation

Find out how you might change a situation so it doesn't repeat itself:

    • communicate your feelings honestly
    • consider compromise
    • practise assertiveness
    • practise time management
  3. Adapt to the Stressor

Change your attitude towards the stressor and re-establish control:

    • gauge how important this stressor really is; if it's ultimately not that important, don't waste energy on it
    • set realistic standards for yourself and others; don't expect perfection
  4. Accept the Things You Can't Change

Sometimes you can't avoid, alter, or adapt to a situation (like a serious illness). In these cases, it's best to accept the situation.

    • don't try to control things that can't be controlled
    • practice forgiveness
    • speak with a friend or professional
  5. Make Time for Fun and Relaxation

It's really important that you take care of yourself. This helps reduce stress and, when done regularly, can help you deal with future stressors. The options are limitless. Here are some examples:

    • read a good book
    • enjoy a cup of herbal tea
    • enjoy nature
    • exercise
    • have a bubble bath
    • take your dog for a walk
    • call a friend
    • have a massage
    • do relaxation exercises (e.g., mindful meditation, progressive muscle, or visualization)
  6. Find a Healthy Lifestyle

    • get regular exercise
    • make healthy food choices
    • limit caffeine and alcohol
